Sanctuary Tour

Pretoria

Activity Description

Just an hour north east of Johannesburg and half an hour from Pretoria lies the Kevin Richardson Foundation Reserve. Nestled between the Bobbejaansberge and straddling the Boekenhoutspruit, the reserve forms part of the Dinokeng Game Reserve, and is the home of the ‘Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary’.

The sanctuary is home to lions (as well as leopard and hyena) rescued from captive-breeding and cub-petting facilities. Enjoy a guided tour of the sanctuary while learning about the challenges facing lions today and the work we are doing here at the Kevin Richardson Foundation.

A guide will drive you between the sanctuary enclosures on a game viewer with no more than ten guests, giving you a chance to take photographs and ask questions.

This tour is suitable for people with children and those that prefer not to walk to far.

Customer Reviews

This is my second time at the sanctuary, the booking process and instructions leading up to the visit is seamless. We had Brenton as our guide the first time and George the second, they were absolutely brilliant and very informative! The sanctuary is HUGE! It's very clean, secure and exactly how you see on the TV. The animals all look so healthy and beautiful, all of their coats are stunning and they are actually well behaved! But that is down to Kevin and the staff who take all the care in the world of them. Will always recommend Kevin's sanctuary to everyone. Thank you all for doing what you do! - Chantelle

A wonderful enlightening experience We had lots of questions that were patiently answered So sad that the cub petting parks don't think about along term consequences. - Teresa

This visit is something I have been wanting to experience for some time now. Oh! and how timing is a very beautiful thing. Earlier this year I received a message from a tiger to connect in person, which lead me to make a series of visits to a very far from ideal captivity setting within a non-sanctuary based game park. For all the very obvious reasons, this is not something I normally do nor feel compelled to however when the call comes (especially from the mighty cat) one answers. When it comes to the Sanctuary one can very easily see how much love and commitment is rooted in this place. I love the multi level (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) care and the consciously created system to rotate the residents at the sanctuary. Ultimately and as well educated by our truly remarkable guide - Brenton, you are a lovely human! - the animals at the Sanctuary are living a life of necessary captivity. I also really love and appreciate the respect given to the elder seniors by retiring them from human visits. It was a real privilege to see them as we moved on. Perhaps the most significant comment and grateful contribution that I can make in honour of this haven is how it felt being there, and what I felt from the big cats. What I felt from the sanctuary and in my open hearted connection with the white lions was peace. A most magnificent sense of peace surrounded in love. These are the best words I can come with to describe it. From this feeling and other information that came to me in that precious moment, it is my belief that these sentient Beings are fully aware of their circumstances and they hold a sense of profound gratitude and love for their rescuers and caretakers that I could never put into words. The big cats that I spent time with elsewhere conveyed a sense of acceptance of their situation. As heartbreaking as that was I took solace in that most of the residents there had come into a sense of acceptance, each within their own way. To experience big cats in captivity that held peace within and radiated peace outwardly to us was a deeply profound honour. I extend my sincerest thanks to the Sanctuary and every member of its team. Best of wishes for the evolution of the Sanctuary. I loved hearing about the journey from the beginning to the present, and the hopes and aspirations of the future. I hope to visit soon again. I would love to go even deeper. May all beings be free. - Lorin

My husband and I went on a Sunday, and Caroline readily assisted us with the opening of the first gate (because it is very secure) and led us from gate to gate. She graciously included our driver in the tour. As she introduced the animals to us and explained what the Sanctuary is all about, we could hear the passion in her voice, as if it was Kevin speaking. We met George, another kind-hearted soul, towards the end. Even if my husband and I had to book a private transportation service just to get there, it was definitely worth it as it was a dream come true for me to finally see the lions who give me joy and relieve my stress whenever there is an update on Instagram and YouTube. For those looking for merchandise, they have a few Craghoppers apparel, plushies, socks, keychains, etc. in the Visitors Centre. If you love lions, leopards and hyenas and you want to learn more about wildlife conservation, please go and visit the Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary. Follow The Lion Whisperer on YouTube and be a Pride Member or Leader. - Patricia

This was an amazing experience. George, our guide, was very passionate and dedicated us a lot of time and attention to explain the activities of the foundation. We loved this experience so much! - Giulia
